"It Went to Spam!"

Who determines which emails end up in our spam folder? I only ask when an important one gets trapped there (which is exactly what happened to me recently). A follow-up email I had been looking for since September 30th had been sitting in my spam folder all along.

From there, I became curious as to where the word came from. Originating as Hormel’s canned meat in 1937, "spam" became internet slang thanks to a scene from a 1970s movie where Vikings sang "SPAM" repeatedly to drown out all other conversation. By 1994, after a mass advertisement flooded early web groups, the term “spamming” officially stuck for unwanted digital “noise.”

While knowing the history of SPAM didn’t solve my email dilemma, it did give me pause.

How often do the important things in life get filtered out by the unwanted noise surrounding us? The quiet invitations to grace, the gentle check-ins from loved ones, or the subtle nudges of the Holy Spirit can easily get buried beneath the daily chatter and clutter of a busy world.

Sometimes knowing the origin of a problem helps; other times, we simply have to learn from the moment and move forward with greater intentionality. As we step into this week, may we clear out the "junk" that drowns out what matters, cultivate a little more attentiveness, and make sure we aren't missing the good gifts right in front of us.
